Homemade Onion Soup Mix

Having this dry French onion soup mix on standby is fantastic. I can’t tell you how many times I have purchased a box of packets from the grocery store and used them up in less than a week.

You don’t just use it to make soup in a hurry, you can use it for so many different recipes.

Soup, dips, gravy, or just as a seasoning for roasts, burgers, pork chops, and even meatloaf. It’s a delicious seasoning secret for so many recipes.

Only 7 simple ingredients from your pantry spice cabinet, and you have a universal seasoning that adds incredible depth of flavor.

I use a packet of this copycat Lipton soup mix pretty much anytime I cook ground beef for a recipe.

Making this onion soup mix in bulk like this makes it very easy to add a little extra or a little less when cooking.

I did the same thing with our go-to steak seasoning. One day, I made a 10x batch and stored it in a mason jar. It’s the best thing!

This saved me a lot of prep time later and I didn’t need to measure every time. Just use the amount you want and store the rest, and you’re done!

So much easier that I started doing it with all my homemade spice mixes.

And don’t worry if the recipe calls for one packet. I give you the amount for that too:)

How long does it last?

If stored correctly, this onion dry soup mix will last up to 6 months. If you don’t use it all before then! Although, I tend to add small amounts of it to so many recipes that mine doesn’t last long.

Best Way To Store It

This should be a airtight container to keep the moisture out. It’s best to make sure all the spices used are also dried.

A cool, dry, and dark place helps keep the spices fresher as they can lose their flavor if exposed to light which makes them excrete their oils.

Glass jars are optimal over plastic containers.

DIY Pantry Mixes

I love saving money and making your own mixes or seasonings. You can control the amount of salt and preservatives in them and the flavor is always better.

Some of my favorite pantry staples to make are this self-rising cornmeal mix, homemade bisquick breakfast mix for pancakes and waffles, and this Au Jus gravy mix for chicken and pork chops.

Is it gluten free?

The homemade version is gluten free and sugar free. Just be sure to check the ingredients of your beef bouillon granules to make sure that no extra ingredients were added.

Things like anti-caking agents can contain wheat so read carefully.

Also, a few of the store bought brands of onion soup mix contain sugar or maltodextrin, yeast extract, corn syrup, and MSG. Things I want to avoid if possible.

Tips for No Leftovers

  • Use sodium free beef granules for the best flavor.
  • Dried onion flakes are best for texture. Don’t use granulated or small minced onion.
  • The onion powder enhances the flavor of the flakes so don’t leave it out thinking there is too much onion flavor.
  • When making soups, add a splash of soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor.
  • When making gravy, a teaspoon of red wine or white wine adds another layer of yumminess.
  • This is perfect for stirring in a container of sour cream for the easiest dip around!
