Cherries in the Snow Recipe

I love old fashioned or “vintage” recipes. Something about making something my mom and grandmother used to make just makes me feel so connected to my family and all the memories we have made. Especially the ones made in the kitchen. They are the best!

Some of my favorites are these butterscotch no bake cookies, this peanut butter fluff, and this chocolate lasagna.

Of all of these, this cherries in the snow is my favorite one. I think it’s because I love cherries SO MUCH! It’s my favorite flavor, so of course having cherries with angel food cake and a creamy filling is just HEAVEN to me.

I’m sure you are going to love this layered dessert, not only because it’s easy and delicious, it makes such a beautiful presentation. Make one for a weekday dessert and wow the family!

ingredients list for cherries in the snow recipe

Ingredients Needed

Cake – Use a store bought angel food cake, make your own, or substitute white cake if needed.

Cream cheese – Regular, low fat, or fat free cream cheese.

Powdered sugar – Might be called 10x sugar or superfine sugar.

Whipped topping – Use the frozen “cool whip” type whipped topping. Not the stuff you spray out of a can. You can also make your own homemade.

Milk – Regular, low fat, or skim milk.

Extract – I like to use almond extract as it tastes yummy with the cherries. Substitute vanilla if you need to.

Pie filling – Cherry pie filling, canned or homemade.

Variations:

  • Try different flavors of pie filling like blueberry, strawberry, peach, or even apple pie filling. You might have to call it something different 🙂
  • Try low fat or fat free versions of the cream cheese and whipped topping. Try your favorite sugar substitute too!
  • Use 2 envelopes of “Dream Whip” topping mix with some milk instead of whipped topping.
  • Add in toasted pecans or sliced almonds for some crunch.
  • Crush up some cookies and place in the bottom for a cookie crust!
  • Serve it in a tall trifle bowl and make multiple layers for a centerpiece dessert.
  • Or you can serve it in individual dishes or bowls to make small parfaits.

How to Make Cherries in the Snow

Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or until ready to serve.

How long does it last?

Store any leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Alternatively, you can make it up to 3 days in a advance.

Just keep in the fridge until ready to serve. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap if your container doesn’t have a cover.

Can I freeze it?

Because of the ingredients, you can technically can freeze it, although I have never tried it.

We usually eat it all in a day or two and I haven’t needed to make it that far in advance that I tried to freeze it.
